Choose rows, pairs or tables, set how many, paste your class list and press Make the chart. Tap students who need the front row, list any pairs to keep apart, and shuffle until you like it. Click two seats to swap them, lock the seats you want to keep, and print.
How to make a seating chart
- Set up the room. Pick the layout that matches your desks and how many rows and desks (or tables) there are. The seat count updates as you go.
- Add the names. Paste your list, or load a class you saved on the home page or in the team randomizer.
- Mark the front row and the pairs to keep apart. Both are optional.
- Press Make the chart. Shuffle again until it works for you.
- Adjust by hand. With “Swap two seats”, click one seat and then another. With “Lock a seat”, click the seats to keep, and they stay put the next time you shuffle.
How the seating rules work
- Front row. Marked students go in the front row of desks or tables first. If there are more of them than front seats, they fill the next row.
- Keep apart. Listed pairs never share a table. In rows and pairs they also don’t sit side by side, in front, behind or at a corner. The chart is redrawn until no pair clashes, so seats stay random. If it can’t be done, it says which pair it couldn’t separate.
- Empty seats. “Fill from the front” leaves the empty seats at the back. “Spread out” scatters them, which helps during tests.
Students’ view or teacher’s view
By default the chart is drawn as the students see the room, with the board at the top. Tick Teacher’s view to turn it around, so the board is at the bottom and the chart matches the room when you face the class from the front. Print whichever view your substitute will find easier.
Your class list stays with you
The chart is made in your browser. Names, rules and the last chart are kept in this browser’s storage on this device, so they’re there next time, and they’re never sent to us. On a shared school computer, press Clear names and chart when you finish.
